Spalted Maple Instinct
Spalted Maple Instinct
This compact personal knife has a hand forged 1084 blade about 3.5 inches long with an 8 inch overall length, making it a perfect size to tackle any task, while being small enough to carry unnoticed. The broad blade is flat ground and has a convex cutting edge. The top edge is false ground and unsharpened. The handle is native Iowan hard maple with a beautiful spalted patten. Brass bolts and tube, and contrasting nickel silver pins, anchor the handle scales. Comes with a custom black leather sheath.
This beautiful knife is all you need to get things done in the field. You can trust your Instinct.
The handle wood for this knife arrived in the form of a piece of firewood from Indianola, IA. I saw the spalting and decided that it was too beautiful to burn. I sliced the log with my trusty bandsaw and dried the wood for several years before stabilizing it in my vacuum tank and finally selecting it for use on this knife.
Spalting is the pattern of black lines running through the grain. It is caused by a fungus in the wood and is naturally occurring in many species.
